Psalm for Prayer and Praise:
Psalm for Prayer and Praise: Psalm 145 (ESV)
1 I will extol you, my God and King, and bless your name forever and ever.
2 Every day I will bless you and praise your name forever and ever.
3 Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised, and his greatness is unsearchable.
4 One generation shall commend your works to another, and shall declare your mighty acts.
5 On the glorious splendor of your majesty, and on your wondrous works, I will meditate.
6 They shall speak of the might of your awesome deeds, and I will declare your greatness.
7 They shall pour forth the fame of your abundant goodness and shall sing aloud of your righteousness.
8 The Lord is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.
9 The Lord is good to all, and his mercy is over all that he has made.
10 All your works shall give thanks to you, O Lord, and all your saints shall bless you!
11 They shall speak of the glory of your kingdom and tell of your power,
12 to make known to the children of man your mighty deeds, and the glorious splendor of your kingdom.
13 Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and your dominion endures throughout all generations.
[The Lord is faithful in all his words and kind in all his works.]
14 The Lord upholds all who are falling and raises up all who are bowed down.
15 The eyes of all look to you, and you give them their food in due season.
16 You open your hand; you satisfy the desire of every living thing.
17 The Lord is righteous in all his ways and kind in all his works.
18 The Lord is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth.
19 He fulfills the desire of those who fear him; he also hears their cry and saves them.
20 The Lord preserves all who love him, but all the wicked he will destroy.
21 My mouth will speak the praise of the Lord, and let all flesh bless his holy name forever and ever.
Scripture Memory for the Week: Psalm 145:4-5
One generation shall commend your works to another, And shall declare your mighty acts.
On the glorious splendor of your majesty, and on your wondrous works, I will meditate.
Praying through the Psalms
Day 1 ~ Worship the Lord
Read: Psalm 145:1-7
Consider:
For Adults: Verse 4 is one of the many verses encouraging us to pass on the faith to those that come after us. What roles do both the family and the church play in this? Are you involved in declaring God’s glory this way? How can you be?
Older children: What is a “Generation?” What is it that the Generations are supposed to be telling each other in this Psalm? How can you do this?
Younger children: Why is God so great? What has God done to show His greatness?
Family Application: Talk together about the people and/or family members who have gone before us who where faithful to share the Gospel to the generations that followed them. Talk about how you can be more faithful to follow the good examples of those who have gone before us.
Pray: Pray together through these verses of the Psalm. Thank God for preserving a witness to Himself through His word and the testimonies of the saints who have gone before us. Ask Him to help you be more faithful to declare His glory to the generations to come.
Meditate: Write this week’s memory verses on a white board in your home and/or on index cards that each family member can carry with them during the week.
Day 2 ~ The Lord is Good and Faithful
Read: Psalm 145:8-13
Consider:
For Adults: Notice that almost every instance of the Psalms directing us to worship points us toward an aspect of God’s character or work as a basis for praise. What are some of aspects of His character in this psalm that lead us tp worship?
Older children: What does it mean that God is slow to anger? Do you think this is related to His “steadfast love?” How can you be more like Jesus in this area of your life?
Younger children: What are some of God’s works? (v.10) How do things in creation point you to God’s greatness and glory?
Family Application: Consider together what a wonderful thing it is that God is gracious and merciful “over all that He has made.” Talk about some of the specific ways in which you have seen God’s mercy and commit to worship Him for them.
Pray: Pray through today’s verses of Psalm 145. Thank God for specific mercies in your life and ask Him to make you more faithful to remember His mercy in times of trial and doubt. Praise Him that his Kingdom is “everlasting” and that His mercy is eternal for all those who trust Him in Christ Jesus.
Meditate: See if anyone in the family can quote this week’s memory verse. Make new note cards of any of the cards from day 1 that may have been lost.
Day 3 ~ The Lord Provides for His People
Read: Psalm 145:14-21
Consider:
For Adults: Can you remember the last time you went through a significant trial? How does verse 14 help us in such times? What do verses 19- 20 suggest to us about the types of cries that God answers? How does the Gospel help us understand these verses?
Older children: How is God merciful even to the wicked through His “common grace?” What should be the response of all people to God’s provision and mercy? Does God ever ignore those who call out to Him in repentance?
Younger children: Who gives you your food? Where do they get it from? How does God provide for all of creation?
Family Application: Talk together about how God is merciful to all, but promises special mercy to those who fear Him. Talk about what the “Fear of God” is for Christians and how we receive His mercy in Jesus.
Pray: Pray through today’s verses of Psalm 145. Thank God for His promise of mercy to all those who call upon Him “in truth.” Ask God to help you to be more honest about yourself and your true needs as you approach Him in prayer. Worship Him today for His mercy and kindness to all creation and especially for the saving mercy He provides through the cross of Jesus.
Meditate: See again if anyone in the family can quote this week’s memory verse. Talk about any ways that this verse has encouraged or taught you this week.
