Pete McCoy, who has spoken to Prime Timers in the past, has graciously accepted to speak to our group at Morningview at our January 24, 2012 meeting.  He was liberated from Germany during WWII, and is an author, adjunct, and professor of History at Faulkner, Troy, and Auburn/AUM.  The group has really enjoyed his presentations in the past. He will bring some of his books as some members were very interested in purchasing them.

His topic will be: “TO GET TO HIM, YA GOTTA GO THROUGH ME”.

Every December it is our distinct privilege and joy to celebrate and treasure God’s grace in Christ Jesus, given to us as a humble baby born in stable.

Though the story is old and familiar for so many of us, a fresh look at it’s cherished lines still brings a sense of wonder and awe even to those who know it best.

One of our favorite traditions at Morningview is the retelling of the sweet story through the the rich sounds and angelic melodies of the holiday season.
Apart from our regular weekend services of worship, we set aside one Sunday evening per year especially for the purpose of treasuring the child in the manger in song.

This is our “Christmas Celebration” and we would love to share it with you!

Please come and be the guest of our Orchestra and Choir as we celebrate the Savior with some of the most time honored songs of the season and then join us for a reception to follow.

Parents and or guardians must first come to the Ministry Center to complete our intake process. Those who qualify will be able to purchase donated toys at drastically reduced rates. $.50 cents for the least expensive up to $3.00 for the most expensive gift. We will also offer stocking stuffers at a rate of $.10 cents each.

Our Toy Store was created to help be a part of a healing process of the family unit. It helps restore dignity and self esteem of the parents while aiding the children in regaining respect for them. It also teaches priorities and sacrifice. I pray you will join us in making a difference in the lives of many.

Course Description: The Truth Project is a small group curriculum comprised of 12 one-hour DVD lessons taught by Dr. Del Tackett. Course Description: Scripture calls us to be faithful to proclaim the gospel wherever God has placed us.  Walt Chantry writes, “Differences between much of today’s preaching and that of Jesus are not petty; they are enormous. The chief errors are not in emphasis or approach but in the heart of the Gospel message.” Based on the account of the Rich Young Ruler, this class will demonstrate that what so often passes for the gospel message today is not what Jesus was teaching.

If we grow up to be great doctors, lawyers, athletes, or musicians, but do not honor and obey God, we have failed. If we are a success in the world but are not faithful followers of Christ, it is all in vain. Not that we can not be those things and honor God, but that if we are those things and do not honor God we have lost! Remember, Ecclesiastes 1:3-4 says, What does man gain by all the toil at which he toils under the sun? A generation goes, and a generation comes, but the earth remains forever.

About the most important thing in your life is to build a foundation for who you are supposed to be in the three main relationships: Relationship to God, Relationship to Family, Faithfulness to Fellowship. The question is, what are you doing today to be who God created and called you to be? You will only be what you are becoming today. Let me give you some examples of how this applies to your every day life – today!

You will only have the relationship with God that you are developing today. Deuteronomy 6:5 says, You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. Jesus brought it forward in Matthew 22:37, And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. Godliness does not just happen with age, nor does it happen over night. It is characterized biblically as a walk because it is a long progression in a deliberate direction; characterized by obedience and devotion, one day at a time.

You will only have the relationship with your spouse and family that you are developing today.

Ephesians 5 and 6 have a great deal to say about having a godly family; Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands. Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish. In the same way husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honor your father and mother” (this is the first commandment with a promise), “that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land.” Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.

How you handle relationships today will affect your relationship with your spouse. If you are fickle and jumping around now, you will be inclined to those kinds of relationships then. If he is abusive and controlling now, then he will probably be more so then. If you are dishonest and selfish now, then you will fight that mode of operation as an adult. You will only view your children with the perspective you are developing today. How do you view children? Are they a blessing from God, or a burden, or a curse? The Bible views them as a gift from God, a crown and a blessing.

You will only have the relationship with the local church fellowship that you are developing today. Hebrews 10:24-25 says, And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near. We can not be part-time churchgoers any more than we can be part-time believers. What is your relationship to the local church today? Are you stirring up something other than love and good works, or are you in the habit of neglecting to meet together? Your relationship with the church today will affect your relationship later. Your role in the church today will affect your role in the church later. Your response to the church today will affect your response to the church later.

You will only become what God created and called you to be, by being what He created and called you to be today. You can only not waste your life by not wasting today! Where are you even promised tomorrow? Why put off until tomorrow what you can do today, because you can not become tomorrow what you are not becoming today!

With freedom comes responsibility, and we have to take responsibility for our faith. We have to remember to always make God our first desire, because that is where real freedom lies. The Bible says that where the Spirit of God is there is freedom, but it also says do not use your freedom as an excuse for sin. We have to remember that God desires to have fellowship with us. He wants to be with us, and wants to bless us and be affectionate toward us. God delights in us when we trust in Him. If we are children of God, then we delight when He delights in us. That is why Piper says that God is most glorified when we are most satisfied in Him, and we are most satisfied in Him when He is most glorified in us.

We are starting a new book in Sunday School this week, the book of Colossians. This little book was chosen to help us all think more deeply about our spiritual lives this Summer, and as we move through it and finish our study of Ephesians, we should be encouraged in living out the more practical aspects of our spiritual lives. I pray that you will make the most of it and really commit to being here this Summer as much as you can, and spending this Summer growing in wisdom and the knowledge of God, knowing the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, so that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.

Next Sunday will be the drawing for the Big Snooz Letter Prize.  So, this is the last week to get you name in the drawing by telling me who Epaphras is and why he is an important figure. The first three people to come tell me who He is gets a small prize this week, but anyone who comes to tell me who he is gets their name in the drawing for the big prize.

There are a couple of other things I want you to be aware of. We will be holding FUEL Praise Team interviews and auditions during the month of June. If you are interested in trying to be part of the FPT, you need to talk to Jason McHenry or myself in the next couple of weeks and fill out an application as soon as they are available (Wednesday, June 1).

Also, We will be selecting a new Student Leadership Team for next year. That team will be made up of one representative from each Sunday School class, as elected by that class. The classes in the Fall will be; 7-9^th grade Girls, 7-9^th grade Boys, 10-11^th grade Girls, 10-11th grade Boys, and Co-ed Seniors. Also, the entire group will vote on one Senior to be the Captain of the SLT. That group will help plan activities and service projects, as they meet with me once a month, and will pray with me as I consult with them concerning ministry to students. Those elections will be held on Promotion Sunday, August 21^st.

Promotion Retreat (Rookie Camp) will be August 20^th, but the new 7^th graders will join us, starting August 3^rd, when FUEL starts back after the July break. Starting that night, Fuel Breakout Groups will be going through a workbook called Developing Disciplines. This workbook is a 25 week strategy designed to help establish the fundamental disciplines that are key to the discipleship process. There will be significant rewards for completing the workbook each semester. Y-MIT will start back September 11^th with The Truth Project!

A big thank you to all Awana leadership, your involvement has made the difference in our clubs.  And to all the children who have participated, you have done a great job!  Awana will not meet during the summer months. Our official kick-off date will be August 17th.  Parents, Cubbies will need to go to their rooms on the Preschool Hall, Sparks and Truth in Training will meet on the 2nd floor North. Please have them in place by 5:45.

However, God has opened a new chapter in the life of the Morningview family,  and that new chapter offers all sorts of new opportunities and adventures. We have a chance to rethink everything we do, how we do it and why we do it. We have a chance to rethink what family ministry is, and what student ministry is, should be and can be. We have a chance to be the best we can be, and do the best we can do to honor God and glorify him through our lives, our families, and our ministries. When we set our hearts and minds on that, because we have set our hope on God, we will find ourselves being transformed by God in our lives, used by God in our families, and delighting in God in our ministries.

In the next few weeks, and over the next few months, we will have a great opportunity to get to know each other. I will be meeting with all of the adult leaders at a Students Leaders Lunch on the 27th and with the SALT Team on the following Wednesday (March 2), during the small group time (7-8 pm). In the weeks following that, I will be meeting with the Sunday School Leadership Team, FUEL Small Group Leaders, Drama Team, Worship Band, FUEL A/V Team,  and other individual teams and leadership groups in order to begin to evaluate each ministry element and develop a comprehensive strategy for moving forward. Rayanne and I also hope to get a chance to meet each family individually over the next few months and we will have a Family Meeting with all student families each quarter beginning with the spring (April 30th).

Starting March 20th, I will be leading a Youth MIT called Don’t Waste Your Life. I encourage all students 7th through 12th grade to participate in this study, unless you are planning on participating in a mission trip this summer. If you are planning on going on a mission trip, you should participate in the adult MIT Study Preparation for Short Term Missions.

This summer we will be attending the D3 Youth Conference on the campus of Southern Seminary and Boyce College in Louisville, Ky (June 27-30th). D3 will be a summer experience full of learning and growing opportunities students who are serious about following Christ. Students can structure their own experience by selecting one of three focus tracks: leadership, worldview and missions. D3 will be an action-packed summer adventure complete with worship, games and life-shaping opportunities. D3 will set the foundation for our ministry moving forward over the next year, emphasizing service, discipleship and evangelism. Our students will also be able to forge friendships with like-minded Christians. Parents will be getting a letter this week containing more detailed information.

I pray this gives you a vision of how we are going to move forward and what we all have to look forward to as a church family. I hope it is an encouragement to you and I know I can count on you all to be on board.

During our hour long guided tour through beautiful DeSoto Caverns, you will see thousands of cave formations, making it one of the most concentrated collections in America. Our tour will begin in a room that is twelve stories high and larger than a football field. The caverns stay a comfortable 60 degrees year round, but with the 100% humidity inside the caverns, the temperature feels closer to 70.

There is a ramp that is used to enter and exit the caverns, so it is wheelchair and stroller accessible. There are two areas during the tour that are not handicapped accessible, but the tour goes into those areas and comes back out into the main room after a few minutes. The pathways are covered with small gravel with handrails provided where necessary for safety.

Restored to its 1930s appearance, the courtroom is the model for Harper Lee’s fictional courtroom settings in To Kill a Mockingbird. It’s now one of the most recognized courtrooms in America because of the popular film version of the book. Although the movie was not filmed here, the set designer came to Monroeville to measure, photograph and draw the courtroom before recreating it on a Hollywood sound stage. Today, fans of the classic novel come to the courthouse from all over the world because it is the most tangible connection to the book’s fictional Maycomb. Visitors are free to move throughout the courtroom, including the balcony, witness chair, judge’s bench and tables used by the prosecutor and defense attorney. Throughout her childhood, Harper Lee often sat in the balcony as she watched her father practice law in this very room.

The museum houses three permanent exhibits: Old Courthouse: Heart of the Community, Truman Capote: A Childhood in Monroeville, and Harper Lee: In Her Own Words.

For the first time our children’s camp will be open to all children who have completed third through sixth grade. This will be the first time also that we will be partnering with another church.  We will join Christ Fellowship Baptist Church in Mobile to provide a top-notch camp both spiritually and physically. The location has already been selected and is Camp Baldwin in Elberta, Alabama.  You can go to the web site by googling Camp Baldwin…it looks like so much fun! Be sure to mark on your calendar June 8th – 11th for this children’s ministry opportunity. Parents, I will be looking for chaperones.  Since this is a Wednesday through Saturday it will be necessary for you to be away only three nights and four days. Registration for this camp will begin mid February. More information will soon be coming your way.

A Women’s Conference is a great addition to the ministry of Morningview for several reasons.  First, women do face unique challenges as they seek to walk with the Lord and apply Scriptural truth to the various dynamics of their lives.  Just as men benefit from instruction on walking with God, leading the family, and biblically balancing home and work responsibilities, so women too benefit from specialized biblical instruction.  As wives, mothers, grandmothers, and leaders in other contexts outside the home, women also need encouragement and instruction in the spiritual disciplines, in biblical priorities and roles, and in the practical expression of Christ-likeness in their marriages and homes.

Second, a women’s conference allows women to receive such instruction in a context where an experienced, gifted woman can serve as the primary preacher/teacher of the Word.  God certainly gifts women with the ability to teach or even preach, but God also limits the exercise of that gift to settings that preserve the leadership and headship of men in delivering spiritual instruction.  1 Tim 2:12 tells us that women are not allowed to exercise teaching authority over men.  That is why the biblical office of Pastor or Elder in the church is limited only to men.  But in the context of a class, a retreat, or a conference made up entirely of women, our ladies have the benefit of receiving solid biblical teaching from a feminine perspective.

Third, this conference provides an excellent opportunity for biblical fellowship among our ladies.  In most family contexts, the husbands do the majority of working and traveling outside of the home.  Wives and mothers may work outside the home as well, but their primary ministry is still the home.  (Wise men realize that their wives often work harder than they do as they maintain their ministry to the needs of the family.)  So for most women, the opportunity to leave home for an evening, to go to a conference center, to rest in a hotel, and to enjoy laughing and learning and worshiping with female friends and church-family members is an immense blessing.

Men, I hope you are making every effort to help your wives and other ladies in the church to be able to attend this event.   I hope you all are taking on the responsibilities of the home and family for these two days as a ministry to the women you love.  It will bless them.  It will refresh them.  It will equip them.  It will encourage them.  Be in prayer for our ladies and for Tanya York as this event approaches.  I love you all dearly!

Born and raised in Lexington, Kentucky, she now serves in Frankfort, Kentucky, where her husband Hershael is pastor of the Buck Run Baptist Church. She has two sons, Michael 26, and Seth 24. Tanya loves people and has a heart for the world to see Christians being real. Her heart is to inspire others to walk the walk among whatever culture the Lord to places you in. A conference and retreat speaker, a ministry of various flavors of mission opportunities in many countries with a special love specifically for Brazil, she has taught Ladies’ Bible studies for over 25 years and teaches in the Seminary Wives Institute at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky.

Your initial reaction to a “Parenting Conference” may be quite similar.  You may think you don’t need it.  Perhaps you have said to yourself, “I’m glad the church does these kinds of things, but we’re doing OK right now.”  Maybe you feel like you’re too busy to fit something like this into your family’s schedule.  Maybe you’ve even gone so far as to think, “We don’t need this, but I sure hope the ___________s attend; they REALLY need some help.”  (If this last statement reflects your thinking, I humbly and lovingly admonish you to look to the log in your own eye.)

The fact of the matter is, with most of our church conferences, the people who could benefit from them the most are almost always the ones who fail to participate.  We may go to doctors for physicals and other preventative health measures, and we may go to the mechanic for tune-ups and oil changes, but when it comes to our spiritual health or the health of our most important relationships, we feel it unnecessary if we aren’t “in crisis.”

I want to challenge you to not wait for a crisis to motivate you to attendance.  Doing “OK” in these areas is not the Scriptural standard.  Don’t wait for a spiritual crisis, don’t wait for a marital crisis, and don’t wait for a parenting crisis when strength and vitality and maturity can be furthered in those areas right now.  Demonstrate the priority of these areas of your life by investing time and energy into learning and growth.

To that end, let me challenge you.  If you still have children (or grandchildren) in the home, you should be at our Parenting Conference on November 6th.  In just a few hours together, you will receive some excellent resources, glean from some sound biblical teaching, and experience a great time of fellowship with other couples.  We are going to discuss the priority of a healthy marriage, and how the husband-wife relationship is foundational to biblical parenting.  We are going to learn about how the Law and Gospel should guide our approach to parenting.  And we are going to discuss practical issues of how to discipline and shape our children’s hearts with Scripture.

If you think you don’t need this, trust me, YOU DO.  If you think you don’t have time for this, I challenge you to weigh this commitment against everything else in your schedule.  Is your favorite television show, a ball game, rest, or even work more important than receiving biblical direction and encouragement for your parenting?  I love you all dearly, and I trust I will see you there.

The Journey of Faith Class is a four-week course designed for children who are interested in knowing what it means to be a follower of the Lord Jesus Christ.  All curious children, K-6th grade, are invited!  This class is especially designed for children who think they have already come to faith in Christ and who are interested in seeking baptism and church membership.  It will help them come to a biblically grounded assurance of salvation.  The Journey of Faith class is prerequisite to any child’s baptism and membership.  We’re also asking that at least one parent attend the class with the child.  Please register for the course by calling the church office at 272-2304 by July 30.  Adult M.I.T. does not begin until September 19th.

This is our third year for Awana Clubs…it has been such a blessing to this church. All the children who have been involved have done a great job. Come and enjoy our closing ceremony in the Sanctuary with Cubbies, Sparks and Truth in Training on Wednesday, May 19th at 6:00 pm.   Parents, Cubbies will need to go to their rooms on the Preschool Hall, Sparks and Truth in Training will meet on the 2nd floor North. Please have them in place by 5:45. Awana will not meet during the summer months. Our official kick-off date will be August 18th.
